Women Who Thrive In Real Estate | Kate Gallivan

An Interview With Kate Gallivan Of The Oppenheim Group Real Estate

Hi Kate! Tell us your story! Why did you decide to become a Realtor? What made you want to get into the real estate industry?

I moved to LA bright eyed and bushy tailed at 24. Worked at CAA in music for a while, but wanted a job that gave me financial stability and general flexibility- real estate checked all the boxes and that’s what I enjoy the most. The flexibility and working face to face with people, I love interpersonal connections.

Do you believe there are any advantages to being a women in the real estate industry?

I think women have a super power and that is intuition- if you can learn to trust that and tap into that, it’ll be your biggest advantage. And we look way cuter when showing a house!

What has been the biggest challenge for you within your career and how have you overcome it?

I think being assertive has been the toughest hurdle for me- growing up in the south you’re taught to be nice and likable, but that won’t win you the listing, get your offer accepted, or get the most $ in credits for your clients. You have to speak up and be bold, and not be so tied to likability.

What has contributed to your success in this business so far?

Mentorship, hands down.

This industry can keep you busy all day - every day, how do you find such a great balance between work-life and social-life?

Um, I don’t. If you find out the answer to this, please let me know ASAP!

Choosing a brokerage and surrounding yourself with the right team is so imperative in this industry, how did you decide that The Oppenheim Group was the best choice for you?

I’ve worked at a few different brokerages, started small at a boutique, then was with Compass for a while which was honestly great, but I love a smaller intimate setting and that’s what the O group has. I also wanted to learn the luxury market and Jason has played in that sandbox for a while.

Who has been your greatest role model or the greatest influence on you within the Real Estate Industry? Can you share why?

Deedee Howard. She’s a partner at the Agency. We did a deal together years ago and she was so impressive with her demeanor and style, she’s had rockstar clients and has built a lasting legacy. We’ve been friends ever since and I still really look up to her!

How do you withstand the emotional highs and lows of the business and stay motivated within one of the toughest sales industries in the world?

It’s hard. Very hard. I still find myself staring at the ceiling at 3am about an appraisal sometimes. Meditation and working out help get me out of my head during the hectic moments.

What would you say is your #1 tip for others to start thriving as a Real Estate Agent?

My very first broker said this to me and I’ll never forget it- “nobody is gonna hand it to you. You have to go get it.”

What’s one thing you wish you could go back and tell yourself on day one as a licensed Realtor?

Stop wasting time with male clients who have no intention of buying and just want to date you!

Touché!

What advice would you give to empower other women within their real estate careers?

Listen to your intuition, always follow up, believe in yourself and treat yourself with every deal you close!

If you could only use one word to describe your life as a Realtor in West Hollywood, California - what would it be!?

Charmed :)

So lovely! Thank you so much for sharing your story and your words of advice with us Kate!
